Matka Canyon is a must visit when in Skopje.
It’s an amazing escape into nature from the busy streets of Skopje that’s full of breathtaking views, hiking, and medieval monasteries. The fact that Matka Canyon is just a short 15 kilometer bus ride makes it an ideal day trip when in Skopje.
How to get from Skopje to Matka Canyon by Public Bus:
The first thing you’ll need to do is head to Skopje’s main bus station which you can see on the map below.
Once you’ve made it here you’ll need to find the platform for Bus 60. It’s located outside under the bridge just past the main waiting area of the bus station. The bus ticket is 75 Macedonian Denar ($1.50 USD) each way at the time of this writing which you can on the bus. It should take you roughly 45 minutes to reach Matka Canyon depending on the number of stops and traffic.
Hiking isn’t the only thing you can do at Matka Canyon.
There’s also Kayaking, exploring Vrelo Cave, climbing rocks, or just relaxing in a boat with a good book. I personally enjoyed casually strolling through the canyon’s trails and climbing up on a rock to enjoy my Potato Borek. Definitely bring some food for the day as the places you’ll find in the Canyon are expensive and not too vegan friendly!
